In the course of rich silver discoveries and increased settlement of the area, the "New Town at Schreckenberg", later Annaberg, was founded in 1496. In the former favorite town of Duke George, magnificent sacral and secular buildings such as the town hall, the Annenkirche, the mountain church of St. Mary, the Franciscan monastery as well as splendid town houses were built.
